The projects and content below, highlight the work I've developed and created in relation to sport. My passion for sport inspired me to centre many of my college projects around women in sport.

I am also currently the PRO at my local GAA club.

EXPOSE YOUR RESEARCH AWARD

Expose Your Research

As part of the inaugural Creative Media Research Symposium at Dundalk Institute of Technology, 2019, I was awarded with the Expose Your Research Award. This is for the successful communication of my dissertation through a visual image.

Award Presentation

This image aims to provide a visual insight into the research question: ‘How has media coverage of Ladies’ Gaelic Football influenced spectator attitudes towards the LGFA?’.

A core part of the research is the focus on attitudes in relation to women in sport, with a specific focus on Gaelic Footballers.

The aim of this image was to represent the primary data gathered in relation to opinions given towards Ladies’ Gaelic Football.

Many attitudes uncovered in this research study revealed issues surrounding sexism and stereotypes relating to gender and sport. However, highlighted in both the image and the research is the importance of the media and spectatorship.

The words, interlinked with the word ‘attitudes’, are key aspects and descriptors of a better outlook on women in sport. The positive impacts that media coverage and increased spectatorship has on attitudes will hopefully continue to outweigh the negative perspectives, represented by the quotes in the background of the image, while working towards setting a new standard of attitudes towards Ladies’ Gaelic Football.

'MORE THAN A GAME'

Inspiration behind this campaign came straight from my love of Gaelic football. I wanted to create content which would be universal to anyone involved in sport. I've noticed that while many sports campaigns do a great job at portrayed the serious side of the sport which involves hard training and a lot of action shots. For my campaign titled 'More than a Game' I wanted to stray from this style. My aim was to capture candid moments of players getting ready and those moments before a game or a training session which says so much more than the act of playing the game.

From this shoot I captured moments which I believe represent the behind-the-scenes aspect of the game which showcases the closeness of a team in the way the light-heartedness can be seen. In the first picture, a sense of community can be seen in the body language between the players and with how natural the scene appears. It is captured during the familiar pre-training/pre-match routine of getting ready. These actions that are so ordinary to the players are filled with moments of down-time and relaxed camaraderie. The picture representing 'positivity' illustrates the humour and fun that happens behind the seriousness of the sport and how it can bring a positive feeling to you both through the people around you and through the love of the game. Which brings me onto the picture representing 'passion'. I see this image as capturing one small moment the player has to themselves while they recognise why they're there. It symbolises to me both the personal passion and also the united passion that brings a team together.

'AT WORK'

The series of images titled 'At Work' was inspired by a 2019 media story in relation to AFLW, Australian Football League Women's. The images which act as a campaign are intended to promote the sport but also the women who play AFLW who are professional athletes.

The media story which inspired this campaign occurred on 17th March, after an image of Tayla Harris, middle image, was captured in full flight taking a kick from a 40 metre mark in a match. Following the post of this image to social media, many derogatory remarks and sexual comments were made towards Harris which revealed a wider issue about the attitudes towards women in sports.

Harris responded to the trolls by tweeting 'Here's a pic of me at work...think about this before your derogatory comments, animals.' This inspired the title of the campaign 'At Work' which is intended as an admiration for women who are making a living by being athletes and doing what they love.
