BLNKDISRUPTION

As a final year college project, myself and three other group members created the project now known as BLNKDISRUPTION. This project was a part of the Fís 2019 Exhibition at DkIT, where it successfully won the 'Best in Show' award for 2019.

BLNKDISRUPTION is a project which explores audience reactions to the progression from traditional into contemporary creative media. My role in this project was as a Graphic Designer and Researcher. I created the outline of the elephant image seen above and with this, myself and another graphic designer progressed into the next design stage. We were inspired by colouring books and were determined to create a piece of traditional media which would be, in itself, powerful and intriguing like many street art pieces we had previously researched. Following this stage of the project, we invited many people into the art studio at DkIT to contribute to the painting of the elephant. For us, we considered this to be an important aspect of the project as it was meaningful to have a community aspect to this project as we wanted the final piece to bring a further sense of interactivity and engagement.

Once the whole elephant was painted, we began the animation project. Due to our time frame and personal skill resources we decided that a 2D Animation style would be sufficient in helping us communicate our intention during the exhibition. We divided the animation process between myself and the other Graphic Designer. I used Adobe Photoshop to create my colour-changing animation as I was familiar with the software and confident I could achieve the outcome I desired. After this, my group member added my animations, with his, into After Effects, which enabled the manipulation of the elephants body movements. Finally we had an mp4 file ready to bring our elephant to life. We implemented the file into Snapchat Lens Studio and created a Lens code to enable anyone with Snapchat to unlock our Lens.

The public were fascinated by our creation and recognised the intentions of our project. I believe we successfully captured the creative possibility of modern creative media on traditional media and how it can broaden the way in which we interact with creative media.
